“We can read the books, we can mix with good satsangis, we can attend group meetings.
We should try to keep that atmosphere of love and devotion around us, in which we have to live.
If we go away from this atmosphere, then the mind pulls ck to worldly thoughts.
To build that atmosphere is essential for meditation . . . crops can grow without a fence, but there is always a danger of someone ruining your crop if it has no protection.
So we need to protect whatever meditation we do by keeping up that atmosphere of love and devotion around us.”
Maharaj Charan Singh

“Japa is the best of all spiritual practices in this modern age.
It is the easiest too.
Make the repetition of the Divine Name the sheet-anchor and prop of your life.”

OM NAMO BHAGAVATE SIVANANDAYA

 Immortal Atmaswarupa,
Loving Greetings; Hari Om

OM NAMO BHAGAVATE SIVANANDAYA
OM NAMO BHAGAVATE CHIDANANDAYA

From Sunday 19th April to Friday 1st May Swami Isvaramayananda, Swami Karunananda Mataji, and twenty-four satsangis from your Yoga Centre visited the Divine Life Society’s headquarters at Muni ki Reti, Himalayas, India. The group was accommodated very comfortably in guest rooms above the auditorium.

The day began with meditation in the Samadhi Shrine Hall at 05h00, after which some joined in chanting the Maha Mantra in the Bhajan Hall until breakfast time.

After breakfast a few had a Hatha session, and in the mid-morning we had a discourse and question-&-answer session with senior Sadhu Sri Gopiji Maharaj or H.H. Sri Swami Nirliptanandaji Maharaj, vice president of the Society, or with Swami Sevabhaktananda or Swami Niricchananda, all of whom lecture at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy. Our satsangis also had two sessions with the general secretary, H.H. Sri Swami Padmanabhanandaji Maharaj. We are very grateful to Swami Gurubhaktananda for arranging these meetings for us and attending to all the needs of the group.

At 11h00 all assembled in the Samadhi Shrine for morning darshan and informal satsang with H. H. Sri Swami Vimalanandaji Maharaj, president of the Divine Life Society.

In the early evening the group attended, and sang in, satsang conducted by Swami Hamsananda in Gurudev Sivananda’s Ananda Kutir, which was followed by Ganga Arati. The day ended with satsang in the Samadhi Shrine. At the invitation of Swami Vimalananda, Swami Isvaramayananda spoke in satsang.

A few devotees took an opportunity to visit Vasishta Guha; and to have havan & puja in the Visvanath Mandir; and some also fed cows at the ashram’s goshala.

On Friday 24th April everyone went up to Mussoorie for a walk on the Camel Back Road, which was preceded by breakfast and followed by lunch at the beautiful Padmini Nivas Hotel.

On Sunday 26th April the group went up to Dehra Dun for satsang at Shanti Nivas, the scene of Pujya Swami Chidanandaji’s mahasamadhi.

On Friday 1st May we departed for Delhi, and on Sunday 3rd May most of the party returned to Johannesburg via Dubai.

CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF
PUJYA SWAMI CHIDANANDAJI MAHARAJ
24th September 1916 – 28th August 2007
Swami Chidananda, sannyas guru of Swamis Karunananda and Isvaramayananda, was one of India’s greatest masters. In August 1963 he succeeded Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj as president of the Divine Life Society, to which your Yoga Centre is affiliated. As proposed by the DLS, members of the worldwide “Sivananda Family” of organisations will celebrate the life of this revered saint throughout the year ending 24th September 2016. Our programme will include:-
A sadhana (spiritual curriculum) retreat.
Evening satsangs of music, singing, videos and snack suppers.
Special satsangs with cultural programmes on or around 24th September 2015 and 2016. These satsangs will include plays acted by children from our School of Hindu Tradition, Culture and Religion.
A “Chidananda Medical Day” on which members of the public can have their blood pressure and body mass indices checked, and receive simple diagnoses, and dietary and other advice.

ALL WELCOME AT SIVANANDA SCHOOL OF HINDU TRADITION, CULTURE AND RELIGION
Children of every race, culture or religion are welcome to learn, have fun, and have something nice to eat, on Sunday mornings from 09h00 to 10h00, in the Garden Hall below the Hatha Hall.

HOME SATSANG
Swami Isvaramayananda and Swami Karunananda Mataji are willing to conduct satsang in private homes, provided that the home satsang is not held to celebrate either swami’s birthday.

FORTHCOMING RECESSES
We remind you that we do not have classes on public holidays which fall on weekdays.

“Thy right is only to action, but never to its fruits. Let not the fruit of action be thy motive, nor let thy attachment be to inaction.”
  Bhagavad Gita 11:47

“A long discipline and intense struggle have conferred upon saints and sages the power of seeing that Reality which worldly people cannot see. Therefore, take to strenuous spiritual discipline.”

“The noble aspirant, who has a serene mind, who thinks and acts rightly, who has subdued all his senses, can obtain Brahman by constant and protracted meditation.”

Note: The Holi party will be held only if it does not rain in the afternoon.

EXPERTISE IN HATHA

Our teacher, Dr. Frances Fleming, was trained in Kerala, in an ashram founded by Swami Vishnudevananda, Swami Sivananda’s foremost exponent of Hatha Yoga. She recently participated in a refresher course in south India, and in her classes

she will share her ever-increasing expertise with us all.

RECESSES

We remind you that we do not have classes on public holidays.

Saturday 19th April is not a public holiday.

Sunday 20th April is not a public holiday, but for many it is a religious holiday.

On Sunday 20th a teacher will not be provided, but the Hatha studio will be

open for members to practise what they have been taught.

TEACHERS’ TRAINING COURSE

The Sivananda School of Yoga invites satsang-attending, vegetarian, non-smokers, who have practised at our Sivananda Centre for two or more years, to be trained as Yoga teachers. Interested members may receive full details from Swami Karunananda Mataji or Swami Isvaramayananda.

Note:  Our trainee teachers are drawn only from those in our own ranks with whom we have become well acquainted.

A SACRED TRUTH

Hidden in the Bible, right under the noses of Christians, and in the Upanishads, right under the noses of Hindus, is the secret of real salvation, as taught by all masters; that is, the way to attain God-realisation and liberation from intermittent reincarnation. If we know and apply the method, we can attain ‘eternal life; if not, then like the devout but blissfully ignorant of both religions, we will continue to be born again and again and again . . . . . . . . At the Sivananda School there are satsangis who know the truth which sets us free. “Knock and it shall be opened unto you.”

“If a man, sitting with eyes closed in a church, allows his thoughts to dwell on worldly matters – the idols of materialism – God is aware that He is not being worshipped.

If a man, bowing before a stone image, sees it as a symbol and reminder of the living omnipresent Spirit, God accepts that worship.”

Paramahansa Yogananda

“Japa is the best of all spiritual practices in this modern age. It is the easiest too.

Make repetition of the Divine Name the sheet-anchor and prop of your life.”

Swami Sivananda

You cannot die, because you were never born. You are immortal *Atma. Birth and death are two false scenes in the unreal drama of Maya. They concern the physical sheath only, a false product formed by the combination of the five elements. The ideas of birth and death are mere superstition. Every soul is a circle. The circumference of this circle is nowhere, but its centre is in the body. Death means the change of this centre from body to body. Why, then, should you be afraid of death?

*Monad; Spirit;

Swami Sivananda

Point of consciousness.

Immortal Atmaswarupa,

Loving Greetings; Hari Om.
